1928
1928
was a struggle to find game articles, but alas pantherfb.org dug deep
into the archives of the old and now defunct Jersey County Democrat.
Although the material shows it's age and is very hard to read, most of
the game stories are more detailed than those from previous years.
Notice that the author of most of these stories was Frederick Miller a
Sophomore. Miller, joined the Varsity football team in 1929 as a Junior
and also played in 1930 while a Senior. He was a very special young man
and gets a special salute from this website for all he accomplished for
our football program.

JCHS
21 CM 20
September
- 1993

Griffith
gets tackled from behind by a CM defender in this 1993 Play-off game.
With it's offense
relentlessly pounding JCHS throughout the second half, CM had the
defending Mississippi Valley Conference champions staggered and on the
ropes.
But the Panthers
promptly served notice that they are not about to relinquish the Valley
title without a fight.
After CM battled
back from a 14-3 halftime deficit to take a 20-14 lead with eight
minutes left, JCHS sophomore Dylan Griffith answered with a
78-yard touchdown run and Kyle Breden added the PAT that vaulted the
Panthers to a 21-20 victory over CM at Jersey Community High School.

ROCHESTER |
The
Freshmen Panthers saw their hopes of a perfect season end Saturday to
the Rochester Rockets. Jersey got on the board with their first
possession and had the early lead at 6-0 after a 8 yard TD run
by Nick Casper. The Rockets with their aerial attack marched down
the field on their next possession and took over the lead at 8-6.
The Panthers were able to move the ball on their foe, but each drive
eventually stalled out. Right before the half, Rochester was able to get
a long Touchdown catch and run to put them up 14-6 going into halftime.
The second half saw both defenses step up to shut each other down until
Jersey was able to drop a 20 yard TD pass from Brian Gust to Garrett
Jones. That touchdown drive wouldn't have happened if it
weren't for a terrific catch by Brody Hagen for a large gain at the
end of the 3rd quarter. The two point conversion to tie was
unsuccessful. Trailing 14-12 with under 5 minutes to play in the game,
the Panthers Adam Fritz got off a great punt that pinned the
Rockets back deep. Two plays later, the panthers defense was
able to sack the Rockets quarterback in their end zone for a Safety to
tie the game at 14 that forced overtime. Jersey got the ball
first and scored on third down with another Nick Casper 3 yard
Touchdown, and the two point conversion failed. Rochester scored on
their 2nd down play and their two point conversion was successful,
ending the hopes of a perfect season for the Panthers with a 22-20 loss. |

CIVIC MEMORIAL |
The
Freshmen Panthers redeemed their loss to Rochester on Saturday by
beating rival Civic Memorial Thursday night. Jersey got on the
board with their first offensive play when Garrett Jones took the
handoff 55 yards for a touchdown. Jersey gave up a touchdown late
in the half and went into halftime tied at 6 a piece. The Panthers
received the kickoff to start the second half and Jones took it to the
house to go up 12-6. The lead didn't last very long as the ensuing
kickoff went to CM's shifty return man and he too returned it for a
score to tie the game at 12. Jones was the panthers workhorse for
the evening as he had another touchdown run of 49 yards. Jersey
got another score late in the 4th quarter when Luke Brown broke a
TD run of 35 yards. Brian Gust had two two-point conversion
passes to both Brown and Jones in the second half to cap off the
scoring. The freshmen defense stepped it up in the second half to
keep the Eagles out of the endzone and it concluded when Jones
intercepted a pass with under a minute to go in the game to end the
Eagles hopes of any chance of a comeback. The freshmen Panthers
improve to 3-1 after the 28-12 victory. They play again next Thursday

Freshmen
Panthers won 14-6 Thursday night in Waterloo. They improve to 4-1 on the
season thanks in part to Garrett Jones 15 yard touchdown run in the
first quarter and another 2 yard run by Nick Casper in the second
quarter. A two-point conversion pass from Brian Gust to Luke Brown ended
the scoring at 14 on the night. The Panther defense stopped an aerial
attack by Waterloo. Brian Gust had 3 interceptions in the contest and
Garrett Jones had another. The young Panthers bent but did not break.
Roger Gettings had a strong defensive game coming up with big tackles
when they were needed the most, including a sack and Brody Hagen
recorded another sack. It was a sloppy game at times, but Jersey was
able to hold strong and finish off Waterloo to the very end. Next game
is against Mascoutah at home 10/2/08 at 6:30pm and is the last home game
for the freshmen Panthers.

MASCOUTAH |
The
Jersey Freshmen Panthers rolled out to a huge victory over conference
foe Mascoutah Thursday evening to run their record to 5-1. Garrett
Jones continues to be the workhorse as they won 42-7. Jones
started off the scoring with a 60 yard punt return for a TD and followed
that up with a 2 point conversion in the first quarter. Jones followed
that score up with another TD run of 13 yards and with a Luke Brown 2-pt
conversion run, the Panthers were up 16-0 going into halftime. The
Panthers got the kickoff to start the second half and four plays later
found themselves in the endzone again after a 20 yard TD run by Luke
Brown. The 2-pt conversion by Brown failed. Panthers up 22-0. The
Freshmen Panther defense was strong on Thursday night, making Mascoutah
fight for every inch. After forcing the Indians to punt, the Panthers
got on the board again after a Jones 45 yard TD run. The 2-pt conversion
by Brian Gust was again no good. 28-0. After getting the ball back
from the Indians yet again, the Panthers scored with another Jones TD
run of 30 yards. The 2-pt conversion pass from Gust to Jones was no
good. 34-0. The Indians got on the board with a kick off reverse
ran all the way back for a TD and getting on the board at 34-7.
The Panthers got the ball again and Brian Gust threw a short pass to
Jones that turned into a 70 yard TD catch and run. The 2-pt conversion
run by Nick Casper was good putting the boys up 42-7.
Defensively the Indians had no place to run and when they did, they
found a flurry of hard hitting Panthers waiting for them. Dalton Baecht
and Garrett Jones both had Interceptions on the evening and Andrew Smith
had a heck of a game, making tackle after tackle. There were a couple QB
sacks by the Panther Defense and the Panther Offensive Line did a great
job blocking downfield and making huge holes for the backs to run
through. A fine job and a great effort by the Freshmen boys to run their
record up to 5-1 and face Highland on the road next Thursday. |

HIGHLAND |
Freshmen
Panther football had a hard fought victory Thursday evening against the
Bulldogs of Highland. The Bulldogs got on the board in the first quarter
after a Panther drive stalled out. They marched down the field and went
ahead 6-0 early in the game. The Freshmen boys didn't back down as they
drove down the field and Garrett Jones broke off a 62 yard TD run
to tie it at six. The two point conversion run by Jones was good
to put the boys ahead 8-6 and they never looked back. After a few more
series by both teams that stalled out the Panthers had the lead going
into halftime. The Bulldogs used a great running game to eat up the
field and sustain drives that kept the Panther defense on the field.
Finally, a break game in the 3rd quarter when a Highland player stuck
the ball out trying to cross the goal line and Andrew Smith knocked it
out of his hands and we recovered the fumble in the end zone. What came
next was the best drive the Freshmen Panthers have had all season. They
took the ball at the start of the 4th period with 10 minutes remaining
in the game and ahead 8-6. Nik Casper was the workhorse tonight,
running right into the middle of Highlands defense, getting first down
after first down and eating up the clock. Casper scored a 1 yard
TD, but only after the Panthers offensive line was able to block his way
down field for about a 75 yards and chew up 8:10 off the clock.
With a 1:50 left to go in the game, Highland had to result to some
trickery. The first time the play worked and got them inside the 30 yard
line. That magic didn't work the second time as the Bulldogs fumbled and
Roger Gettings was able to recover the ball. All that was left was
for Brian Gust to take a knee and run off the clock and send our boys
onto victory. The win puts the Panther freshmen at 6-1 and going to
Triad next Thursday for the last conference game before finishing off
the season at Southwestern at 6:00 pm on 10/23 (this game time has been
changed).

TRIAD |
Mental
errors plagued Panther Nation from another conference victory. The
Panthers lost for only the second time this year, but this time to
conference power Triad 23-16. The Freshmen Panthers got on the board
first after recovering a fumble from the Knights. The offensive series
concluded when Brian Gust ran it in for a 1 yard TD. Luke Brown
followed that up with a nice little run for the 2-pt conversion.
The Knights got on the board after they drove down to the 10 yard line,
but the Panther defense held and forced them to kick a field goal (8-3).
That score remained the same until halftime. To start the second
half, the Panthers got the ball and were able to drive down the field
and score again on a Luke Brown 30 yard TD run. Nik Casper was
able to add the 2-pt conversion on a run right up the middle, (16-3).
The very first offensive play the Knights ran, went for 60 yards and a
touchdown. (16-9). After the next offensive possession by the
Panthers resulted in a 4 yard punt, the Knights were able to quickly get
into the end zone to go ahead 23-16 and give the ball back with under two
minutes to go. Brody Hagen made a diving catch out of nowhere and got
out of bounds for the first of the big pass plays. Next it was Roger
Gettings that got a long pass down the left sideline for a huge gain.
The Panthers were able to get the ball to the two yard line. A botched
play resulted in a two yard loss. On the 4 yard line and with 2.8
seconds left, the Panthers were able to run one more play. They got to
the 1 yard line and was tackled, ending the game and ending any chance
at beating all teams in conference. The Freshmen play again for
their last game of the season on Monday, October 23rd at Southwestern at

night brought a convincing win and a beautiful note to end the freshmen
season with and build on towards next season. The Panthers beat
the Piasa Birds on their own turf 32-0 to end the season with 7 wins and
2 losses. Nik Casper got the Panthers on the board early in the first
quarter with a 4 yard TD run. That TD was set up by a 45 yard scamper
down the sideline by Brody Hagen. Luke Brown converted the 2 point
conversion run to give the Panthers an early 8-0 lead. The Birds drove
down the field and eventually had to punt giving the ball back to JCHS
in the 2nd quarter. Again the Panthers marched down the field and this
time Garrett Jones caught a 10 yard TD pass from Brian Gust. Luke
Brown followed that up with another 2 point conversion run to go ahead
