1928
1928
was a struggle to find game articles, but alas pantherfb.org dug deep
into the archives of the old and now defunct Jersey County Democrat.
Although the material shows it's age and is very hard to read, most of
the game stories are more detailed than those from previous years.
Notice that the author of most of these stories was Frederick Miller a
Sophomore. Miller, joined the Varsity football team in 1929 as a Junior
and also played in 1930 while a Senior. He was a very special young man
and gets a special salute from this website for all he accomplished for
our football program.

JACKSONVILLE |
Well after losing both at the
varsity and freshman levels, the JV didn't want
to leave Jacksonville without a win. Our defense lead by Luke
Pohlman was on
the attack all afternoon causing turnovers and getting sacks on the
Jacksonville QB, who I am sure was glad that game was over at the end of
the
day...The Panthers got started off to a quick start scoring right off
the bat
on a Brian Gust TD run and a two point conversion run by Justin Carrico.
After that
the defense took over, Luke Pohlman broke through the line and
stripped the
ball away from the quarterback and took it for the last touchdown the
Panthers
would need on this day.. And a key play at the end of the game by Jordan
Nevlin
sealed the deal for the Panthers, as we defeated Jacksonville 14-8. It
was a
good all around TEAM effort that led to the victory, good job boys Coach
Skinner and myself are proud....

GRANITE CITY |
Alright well the JV Panthers
defenately showed up to play on Saturday against
Granite City. They posted an impressive 38 to 6 win over the JV
Warriors in
front of a very supportive home crowd!! The Panther offense got started
right
off the bat and never looked back with two rushing touchdowns from Tyler
Slaten and the third and last touchdown was
scored by Mitch Scoggins, from a nice 40 yard pass by Brian Gust.
The Panthers
were also successful on four 2- point conversions, two by Slaten, one by
Justin Carrico
and the last by Nik Casper... Ryan McQuaid also contributed to the
offense
with some good runs on counter plays and a couple passes received.... Of
course
all of this would not be possible without the work horses up
front, the O-line
did an excellent job driving the Warrior defenders off the ball and
making
blocks down field....
The Panthers defense once again shut down the opposing offense and
caused havoc
in the backfield all day.. an attack of blitzing linebackers gave the Warrior
offense trouble all day long as they could never get anything going... Hard
hitting Andrew Smith lead the way and two defensive scores by Tyler Slaten
and
Brody Hagen all but sealed up the game for the young Panthers.... We
hope to
see these great fans show up and support these boys in Rochester next
Saturday as we face our toughest opponent so far!!! Great job boys keep
up the
good work, it will pay off in the end...

ROCHESTER |
The trip to Rochester didn't
go quite like the JV Panthers would have liked,
although the effort was there. They lost a hard fought game
31-24.. The
defense overall did a good job, just got beat on a couple of passes deep
by the
Rochester quarterback, who showed some poise in the pocket. Justin
Carrico had
a great day running the ball with two running touchdowns and a two point
conversion. Tyler Slaten also ran hard behind the hard working
offensive line
of the Panthers.... Slaten added a touchdown with a two point conversion
as
well. The Panthers fought hard all day long and with a lot of guys going
both
ways, while Rochester had the luxury of having a lot of depth at every
position. It says a lot about the character of these kids to be
able to fight
hard all game against a team who was fresh all night... Up next for the
Panthers is Highland on Monday night at home. so come out and cheer on
the
junior varsity as they start their conference campaign with a win!!!!

HIGHLAND |
The JV Panthers lost a rained
shortened game against Highland 14-0. The
Panthers just couldn't seem to get everything on the right page as
penalties
hounded them in their only half of football Monday night.. Now it's time
to
regroup and be ready to go against Mascoutah next Monday, so come out
and
support your JV boys.. Oh we have also brought up some freshman and I
would
like to mention their names: Mitch Kimble, Dillon Hill, Garrett Blasa,
Cody
Rethorn, Jacob Hamilton, Cory Snyder and Cole Bugger. Thanks for
stepping up
when called upon..

MASCOUTAH |
Well the trip to Mascoutah
didn't go as well as the JV Panthers would have
liked as they dropped a heartbreaker to the Indians 30 to 18. When
the offense
didn't fumble the ball they ran all over Mascoutah with Justin Carrico
and Nik
Casper carrying much of the load. Nik Casper was the offensive
star rushing
for over 200 yards with all three touchdowns. The offensive
line did
an excellent job giving our running backs room to run down the field.
Some key fumbles, one returned 60 yards for a touchdown hurt the
chances of the Panthers finishing the Indians off. The Panther
defense played
hard, but were not always put in a good position by the fumbles we gave
up. I
just want to say besides two or three really big plays the defense
played very
well and is improving each week. We just need to re-group and if
we can correct
the turnover problem this team can score on anybody at will.. I hope
everyone
will come out and support the guys as they travel to Waterloo on Monday..
