FOOTBALL
1938-'39

ILLINOIS
SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF (here)
The "Panthers" opened the football season on their
own field on September 16. Even though the team was
inexperienced they held the I.S.D. boys to a tie. The visitors
scored in the second quarter but the score was matched by one
of our own. Robinson "flipped" a pass to Baxter who
carried it over. Score: I.S.D., 6; Jerseyville, 6.
ROODHOUSE (here)
On September 23 they met the fast heavy
"Railroaders". Although it was a fight all over the
field the "Panthers padded across" the goal only
once while the "Railroaders" steamed over four
times. Score: Roodhouse, 25; Jerseyville, 6.
GREENFIELD (there)
On September 30, the "Panthers" had the first bright
day, they invaded Greenfield territory. The Greenfield boys
are a plucky lot of boys but coudn't stop Stevens when he
started around end for the only marker of the game. Score:
Greenfield, 0; Jerseyville, 6.
CARROLLTON (here)
On October 7, the "Panthers" opened the score
against the heavy Carrollton team by making a safety, but
Carrollton overcame this score, by a touchdown. In the third
quarter Holmes plunged through for six points. In spite of the
best defense our team could put up the visiting team scored
again. Score: Carrollton, 12; Jerseyville, 8.
JACKSONVILLE (there)
October 15 the "Panthers" went to Jacksonville to
meet the heavy, hard-hitting team there. The constant
"plugging" of the heavy team proved too much for the
"Panthers." In spite of Holmes' hard plunges and
Robinson's accurate passes and kicks, they failed to score.
Score: Jacksonville, 13; Jerseyville, 0.
PITTSFIELD (there)
On October 21, the "Panthers" motored to Pittsfield
to meet the boys on their own field. Early in the first
quarter Nail threw a pass to Holloway to be carried over in
fine style. This fast score seemed to wake the Pittsfield team
up because they came back with a score of their own and held
it that way in spite of all the plunges by Holmes and end runs
by our other backs. Score: Pittsfield, 7; Jerseyville, 7.
WHITE HALL (here)
On October 28, the "Panthers" met the White Hall
boys. In the first quarter Stevens padded across for the
opening score. Holmes followed for the extra point. In the
second quarter the White Hall boys slipped a score over on our
boys but the "Panthers" came back strong in the
second half. Holmes plunged through for another score and then
Robinson threw a lateral to Stevens who ran about fifty yards
for another touchdown. Holmes again made our extra point.
Score, White Hall, 6; Jerseyville, 20.
PLEASANT HILL (there)
On November 3, the "Panthers" motored to Pleasant
Hill. Bad luck seemed to tread on their heels. Although the
"Panthers" tried every trick they failed to score.
With the hard pounding of Holmes absent to back up the line in
the second half, the brunt of the Pleasant Hill attack fell on
the very capable shoulders of Louis Christen who did a
creditable job of discouraging the invaders. Score: Pleasant
Hill, 0; Jerseyville, 0.
MARQUETTE (here)
On November 11, the "Panthers" defeated the hard
fighting "Explorers: from Marquetted High. John Robinson
threw a pass to Cummings who carried the pigskin over. Holmes
smashed through the line for our extra point. Cruzat, the
shifty halfback of the "Explorers", made Marquette's
only marker. Score: Marquette, 6; Jerseyville, 7.
JERSEY BOY ON THE ILLINOIS VALLEY CONFERENCE TEAM
Every year after the football season has ended, all the
coaches in the Illinois Valley Conference hold a meeting and
pick the best players to form two teams. Louis Christen,
Jerseyville's center was picked as center on the first team.
Frank Christen, Louis' brother, was picked as tackle on the
first team last year.
