FROM

COACH JACOBS

Hello All-

As the summer approaches, it is a necessity that we get our practice field in shape.  We are starting to put treatments down to help the current practice field conditions. So--Sunday Gatherings and Open Field Sessions are cancelled as of today.  We want to make sure we have the best facility available when Summer Opportunities start in June.  Please stay off the grass.  We will also be doing some renovations to the inside of the Complex as well.

Pending school board approval, Camp/Opportunity forms will be available soon.  Please look for them via e-mail and at each school.

The energy and enthusiasm is high.  I can't wait to actually move and start having some fun!

Contact me with questions.

Let's be special!!!!!!!

Thanks!!

JCHS Football Hall of Fame

1928

1928 was a struggle to find game articles, but alas pantherfb.org dug deep into the archives of the old and now defunct Jersey County Democrat. Although the material shows it's age and is very hard to read, most of the game stories are more detailed than those from previous years. Notice that the author of most of these stories was Frederick Miller a Sophomore. Miller, joined the Varsity football team in 1929 as a Junior and also played in 1930 while a Senior. He was a very special young man and gets a special salute from this website for all he accomplished for our football program.

FOOTBALL 1939-'40

Gridiron Facts

September 16. The Panthers opened their football season at Jacksonville on the I.S.D. field. The warm weather affected both teams. the I.S.D. boys were the first to score. They scored a touchdown on an intercepted pass and then made the extra point; thus making seven points in the second quarter. The Panthers came back to score in the fourth period on a 19 yard pass from Nowak to Plato, who was in the end zone. Nail then ran around left end for the extra point. Final score: I.S.D., 7: Jerseyville, 7.

September 29. The Jersey Township High School Panthers met, on their own field, an aggressive Pittsfield football team. The Panthers, without  Davey Lewis in their backfield, lost by a score of 18-0. This was their first Illinois Valley Conference game of the season.

October 7. Jerseyville went to Roodhouse for an Illinois Valley Conference game. They met a strong fighting team and lost by the score of 26-6. Louis Nail scored the lone Jerseyville touchdown after Willie Plato "pulled down" a long pass.

October 13. The Panthers met the Greenfield team on the home field. The Panthers played a good game and were within the opponents' 10 yard line several times but failed to score. Greenfield scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 30 yard pass, but they failed to make the extra point. Final score: Greenfield, 6; Jerseyville, 0.

October 20. The Panthers played Carrollton on their own field. The Panthers were rated the "underdogs" as Carrollton was leading the Conference and Jerseyville had failed to win a game. In the first three quarters neither team was able to score, but in the fourth quarter the Panthers outplayed the Carrollton squad. Nail blocked a Carrollton kick in their own territory and Jerseyville took possession of the ball on the Hawks' 21 yard line. With the help of good blocking, Nail, Nowak and Lewis advanced the ball to Carrollton's 5 yard line where Lewis plunged over for the touchdown. The Panthers failed to make the extra point. Final score: Jerseyville, 6; Carrollton, 0.

October 28th. The Panthers met White Hall on the Maroons' home field. The teams played an almost even game. The Panthers were within scoring distance several time but failed to score until the fourth quarter. White Hall threatened to score only once. In the fourth quarter Nail carried the ball over the goal line for the Panthers but after he crossed the line he dropped the ball and Lewis recovered for the Panthers. Lewis plunged over right tackle for the extra point. Final score: Jerseyville, 7; White Hall, 0.

November 1. The Panther met Winchester on their home field and met with bad luck again. Winchester proved to be too strong for them. Winchester scored a touchdown in the first quarter, and also made the extra point. The Panthers were unable to score. In the fourth quarter Winchester scored three more touchdowns and one extra point. Final score: Winchester, 26; Jerseyville, 0.

November 10. Pleasant Hill met Jerseyville on her own field. The game was about an even break until Nail scored a touchdown for Jerseyville in the third quarter after he had blocked a punt. The extra point was made by Lewis. Jerseyville won by a score of 7-0, their third Conference win.

November 25. The Panthers met the Marquette Explorers on the Alton high School field. This was the final game of the season for the Panthers. Marquette got an early start by scoring six points in the first quarter. The Panthers came back to score in the third quarter and then made the extra point. the Marquette team scored another touchdown and the extra point in the third quarter also. The Marquette team scored another touchdown and the extra point in the third quarter also. The Panthers could not overcome this lead. Marquette scored again in the last quarter. Final score: Marquette 19; Jerseyville 7.
