SINCLAIRS

MR. PANTHER AWARD

This award is presented to the Panther player who best displayed dedication, Integrity and Loyalty for the sake of his team.

2009 Winner:

Michael Pruitt

1928

1928 was a struggle to find game articles, but alas pantherfb.org dug deep into the archives of the old and now defunct Jersey County Democrat. Although the material shows it's age and is very hard to read, most of the game stories are more detailed than those from previous years. Notice that the author of most of these stories was Frederick Miller a Sophomore. Miller, joined the Varsity football team in 1929 as a Junior and also played in 1930 while a Senior. He was a very special young man and gets a special salute from this website for all he accomplished for our football program.

JERSEY TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL

JTHS 1940 OPP
7 Benld

Opening the season on the Home Gridiron, Jersey Panthers played strong Benld. Fighting hard the Panthers went down into defeat.

32
13 White Hall

Jerseyville went to White Hall for the first Conference game. The two touchdowns in the first half were enough, and beat the long passes.

7
27 Winchester

Jerseyville was outplayed by the home team the first half of the game. But they came back in the last half to victory.

13
13 Pittsfield

Pittsfield got off to an easy lead while the Panthers were having trouble moving. In the last five minutes the J's began clicking and made 13 points.

14
6 Roodhouse

At first the game was tied for first place. Jerseyville invaded, but Roodhouse proved too speedy for the Orange and Black.

12
7 Greenfield

Jerseyville got off to an early lead with a touchdown and an extra point on the third play of the second quarter of the game. Greenfield came back with long runs and won.

12
2 Pleasant Hill

On the coldest night of the season Jerseyville was defeated on the home field by a great team.

26
13 Carrollton

This night the Panthers went to play their traditional strongest rivals. Carrollton played the better game but with the intercepting of two passes and runback by McNeil of 60 and 80 yards for touchdowns the game was ours.

FOOTBALL 1941-'42

Was it Zupple who said, "A team can't be licked who won't be licked"? Well, Jerseyville's football team made this a true statement. Having lost four games in a row the team went to Carrollton for their last game-and WON. But the real story is not in the score. The larger half of the team had played for Coach during the four years and knew his ways and his system of football. The team worked hard every night after school. Before practice the outfit would take four or five laps around the track, sometimes even six or seven. There was a real spirit of teamwork and they worked hard together. Any team that can make thirteen points in five minutes has something! Coach always said that he wouldn't give up; well, the team caught the spirit- they didn't either.

1966 "SPIRIT OF HOMECOMING"

Clem Groppel

FOOTBALL LETTERMEN

Robert Tracy   Senior

In this, his first year out, Bob was used a great many times in the line.

Edwin Mathon Sophomore

Fast and shifty in the backfield, with two more years to play, Eddy should really be a wow.

Raymond Cherry Senior

Cherry was a fine end, out-talking the enemy.

Ralph Cottingham Junior

Another year and Ralph should be a valuable lineman.

Adrian Green  Senior

One of the hardest blockers in any backfield, "Bill" was invaluable to the team.

Junior Turpin Sophomore

The only sophomore on the first team, Turpin was the "fifth"  man in the enemy's backfield.

Douglas McNeil Senior

"Gee, ain't he fast!"

Charles Worsham Junior

Charlie was relied on to back up the line. He is the captain-elect for 1943.

Paul Holland Captain-Senior

Captain of one of the finest teams Jerseyville has ever had, Pat deserves a lot of the credit.

Clem Groppel Senior

Started as lineman but shifted into the backfield, Clem became our yard gainer.

Leslie Kelly    Junior

Kelly was a hard-running back, sure to make yardage every time he got the ball.

David Molohon Senior

An unobnoxious little fellow, "Molly" could always be depended upon for power in the line.

Wallace Goff  Senior

Here's to our kicker, who helped keep the enemy from our goal.

Ralph Johnson Junior

A Junior this year,-1943 should see Ralph as the best lineman on the team.

George Baxter Senior

Baxter was a guard who helped stop those line plays of Carrollton's.

George Holland      Senior

George was a strong sixty-minute man at guard.

     Bill Dearing         Senior

A lot of the credit for tackling goes to Bill, who was always in there fighting.

Junior Lettermen

Junior lettermen now, these boys will form the nucleus of the team in future years.

Albert Woolsey   Senior   Manager  Gerald Foulon    Assistant Coach       W.J. Creamer        Head Coach
