MR. PANTHER AWARD

This award is presented to the Panther player who best displayed dedication, Integrity and Loyalty for the sake of his team.

2009 Winner:

Michael Pruitt

1928

1928 was a struggle to find game articles, but alas pantherfb.org dug deep into the archives of the old and now defunct Jersey County Democrat. Although the material shows it's age and is very hard to read, most of the game stories are more detailed than those from previous years. Notice that the author of most of these stories was Frederick Miller a Sophomore. Miller, joined the Varsity football team in 1929 as a Junior and also played in 1930 while a Senior. He was a very special young man and gets a special salute from this website for all he accomplished for our football program.

PANTHERS TRIUMPHANT ON GRIDIRON

BLUE AND WHITE EQUALS EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD RECORD
WITH FIVE WINS AND THREE LOSSES

Sept. 12 Powerful South Central team downs Panthers in season's opener.- J.T.H.S. gridders get much-needed experience in non-conference starter

Sept. 25 Blue and White displays power in first valley tilt- Junior Lorton, burly tackle, opens big holes for hard-running Bailey to pile up most of the yardage.

Oct. 2 Panthers top Winchester eleven in passing duel- Jim Warford's return bolsters Panthers' defense.

Oct. 10 Jerseyville loses thriller to Pittsfield- Forward wall of Lorton, Hewitt, Grafford, and Isringhausen holds down high scoring Saukees.

Oct. 17 Panthers suffer second conference loss at hands of Roodhouse- Landon's defensive game, Bailey's brilliant running, and Thurston's fine break-away running keep Railroaders constantly on their toes.

Oct. 24 Panthers maul Greenfield Tigers- Tied for second place in Illinois Valley Conference- Campbell and Bell were the big guns in this battle- Bob's excellent signal calling and Dick's shifty running make things look easy.

Oct. 30 Panthers score convincing victory over old rivals, assuring a third place berth- The entire Jerseyville backfield were standouts in the Carrollton game.

Nov. 7 Panthers equal eighteen-year-old record in winning final game. Substitutes see plenty of action in one-sided triumph over the Pleasant Hill eleven.

George Lorton

My grandpa, George Lorton, started on the Panthers offensive line in 45, 46, 47....he was a great man and your website gives me an opportunity take a moment and look at him when he was in his prime.....a time when I did not even know him.....when I was entering my freshman year at Calhoun I was a 5' 7", 125 lb skinny freshman.....I was obviously worried about the upcoming season and if I had what it took to be as good as him and my father, Jeff......my grandpa told me the following, "Nate, it doesn't matter how big you are just as long as your tougher than the guy over ya".....because of this basic approach, I went on to start on every special team as a freshman, became a 4 year letterman on two semi-final teams and a captain of two state championship teams......on now, ironically, I have ended up teaching the same philosophy at his old high school.....thanks, your effort is much appreciated!!
